Gum Disease, or periodontal disease, affects the foundation of the teeth as well as other parts of the body like the heart. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease which consists of swollen and irritated gums from plaque build up. If left undisturbed, the bacteria will grow and spread causing detachment of the gums, bone loss, bad breath, bleeding gums, sensitivity, and pain.
Untreated gingivitis leads to periodontitis noted by bone loss, bleeding gums, loosening of teeth, and eventually the need for extractions and implants or dentures. We recommend cleanings and exams every 6 months to maintain a healthy mouth. Those with signs of gum disease may require a deep cleaning followed by more frequent visits to control the gum disease.
